My Students

Getting high school students who don't really enjoy reading to take an interest in literature can be a real challenge, however, thought provoking, topical, and sometimes controversial subjects can make all the difference when it comes to getting the students engaged and actually wanting to read.

My students grow up in an urban environment where many have to deal with issues of poverty.

Our school is a large school in this area and though we have over 2,000 students we try our best to reach all of them and help them get ready for a future in either college or the professional world.

My Project

Each of my students will be given their own copy of the book so that they may take it home with them and read it on their own. For some, this may be the only book they actually own. They will engage in many activities on their own including making annotations in the book itself, and creating thought journals that only I will read. Because this book deals with the topic of suicide it is important that they be able to think about the topic on their own and share their feelings about it without having to feel the pressure of discussing it with their peers until they are ready. By the end of the book students will be able to discuss their views on suicide, analyze the motivations of the characters in the book, and apply what they have learned or concluded to their own lives and those of the people around them. Hopefully, after reading this book, they will have a greater awareness and understanding about the causes and impact of suicide among teens.

This book is about an intensely personal subject and it may help some students deal with their own thoughts and feelings about suicide and maybe encourage some to get help or help someone else.

Also, when students learn that the books are provided through the donations of strangers, it shows them that there are good, caring people out there who want to help them succeed.
