Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 7th graders are exploring a unit entitled, "Your Vote, Your Rights". Through drama and poetry they will discover how authors use characters' conflicts to express perspectives about democracy, government by the people.

The ELA team at my school would like to order two class sets of "12 Angry Men" for our students since our textbook only has an excerpt from the play.

Exposing students to a play that was written in 1957--two years before the civil rights movement will show how struggles for personal liberties took place--even back then.

My Project

Students will read the play together. Students will pause after each act to reflect on each character's actions. Students will discuss the meaning of democracy and how it applies to people's individual freedoms.

Students will then view the film from 1957 and create an essay comparing and contrasting the play and the film.

This project will enable them to discuss their prospective of democracy. This project will carry over into their Social Studies class were they will learn more about the Judicial system in the USA.

We will also talk about various debating styles and techniques and have a debate in class surrounding the play.
