My Students

My 33 first graders are my super stars. We are packed like sardines in our room and I am constantly striving for ways to engage them in the learning process. Including integrating the latest technology.

My students have a wide range of academic abilities.

Some are still trying to figure out what sound matches each letter. Others are ready to read second grade books and write book reports. The most important time of day to meet each students' individual needs is during guided reading. During this time, I meet with groups of five or six students to scaffold their learning. However, with thirty three six and seven year old children on roll, it is very difficult to keep them attentive and keep the noise level reasonable. There are a multitude of websites and applications to choose from that I can utilize in helping students build on the skills necessary to make them grade level readers.

My Project

During guided reading time, students who are struggling readers will have opportunities to rotate the tablet. They will work on websites and applications that will early literacy skills such as letter recognition, letter sounds, sight words, and spelling. When I am working with the struggling readers, students who are above grade level will have opportunities to read and respond to text through age appropriate text and applications.

Many students in my room come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Often, they are not exposed to the latest technology. Having this technology in the classroom and teaching students how to comfortably manipulate and learn from the applications will place them at an advantage. It will also be a tool for keeping students engaged and quiet during guided reading.
