Help Mrs. Gardner

I was hired for an 8th grade Science position that requires that the students are exposed to a high degree of inquiry-based, hands-on activities. Although I am currently working toward getting some of the basic science equipment I need (goggles, graduated cylinders, etc.) through other sources, I'm still left with needing some "not-so-basic" equipment to help me do a better job at providing hands-on experiences to my students. These tape measures would be used for activities in two separate units in the eighth grade curriculum. The first is for our "Geological Evolution" unit. Students first use algebra to calculate and convert major events in Earth's geological history into distances along a 100' tape measure (i.e. Age of Earth - 4.6 billion years old = 100.0', oldest known rocks - 3.3 billion years old = 71.7', etc.). Students then go outside to the soccer field and lay out notecards and flag stakes along the 100' tape measure, while they fill out a reflective worksheet on what they experience. This activity is really useful in allowing students to "experience" Earth's history, in that they realize that all of the events that they typically think happened so long ago (Age of Dinosaurs, etc.), really only happened very recently (4.9' from the present, on their timelines...). Secondly, this activity is used in our hydrology unit, when we are studying marine life and ecosystems. In groups of 2s and 3s, students take drawings of whales that they then redraw at a different scale. Eventually, the students go outside and lay out a 100' X 100' grid using little orange flag stakes. They then use yellow marking tape to lay out the actual outline of their living whale. This activity is great for allowing students to actually visualize and experience the true size of living whales (and the amount of food they require, their niche in the ecosystem, etc.).
