My Students

My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious, and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that a portion of our students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism but none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated and excelling in the classroom is the norm!

Our class of students are a unique, clever, determined, and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs - making each and every lesson new and exciting!

My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

My Project

Every morning we start our day with a math problem. It can be a word problem, an activity on time, a place value activity or some fun math on the interactive white board but it is part of our daily routine that has a large impact on our academics. When solving word problems to 100, it is important that my students have manipulatives (materials) to count with and show their work. The cubes that we currently have in our classroom are all different (colors, variations, etc) so they do not link together and it is hard for students to put them into groups of 10. The dry erase markers that we have are used and dried and I often can't find colors to show my thought process on the white board.

We need unifix cubes (enough for 100 per student in two different colors) and dry erase markers so that we can visually represent our daily math problems.

We will use the mini learning clocks for our morning meeting time routines as in first grade we are asked to master time to the hour and half hour. The rubber bands will be used for our geoboards and the erasers will be used during our math lessons so students can make sure they are doing their best work and don't have to stress about erasing their work.
