My Project

This Lunar New Year, we are excited to celebrate the Year of the Dragon and share the Chinese culture with our students! We are Ms. Wei, a bilingual speech-language pathologist, Mr. Sam, an occupational therapist, and Ms. Watt, a special education teacher serving students with autism ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade at a public school in a low-income high-need portion of Brooklyn, NY. Our students come from some of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the city and among our students are many first-generation Asian-American students.

It is very important for our students to learn about different cultures and traditions and to treat others with respect.

Not only do our students have to navigate through the chaotic times in our world today, but also have to quickly adapt to unpredictable changes, which is not easy for our students who need to follow a daily schedule/routine and have sensory processing difficulties in addition to difficulties communicating their needs and wants.

Furthermore, several studies have shown that autism is especially stigmatized in collectivist cultures such as Asian cultural groups, where Chinese parents of children with autism are more likely to feel shame because they focus more on social identity. We realize there is an urgent need for more allocation of resources and concerted efforts to foster more positive attitudes towards people with autism in the community.

We are asking for a 5x10 rainbow mat for our students and fidgets as our students need these tools to self-regulate and calm down as they provide comfort and relaxation. In addition, we are asking for classroom supplies and disinfecting /cleaning supplies which are needed to keep our students and staff healthy and safe from everyday germs that may appear in the school building.
