I am a 6th grade math/science teacher in South Los Angeles. I am a Teach for America corps member. I teach English Language Learners. My students are fantastic, and they are highly motivated. Given the restraints of their language skills, I enjoy using objects, pictures, and homemade vocabulary journals to help students understand the wordage used in their science books. These activities make learning science easier and more enjoyable for them. Last year my students made Science Vocabulary Journals (journals with a science word, its definition, and a sentence). This year, I want to expand on this by having the students create pictures to go with the vocabulary words. I also want to use more transparencies on the overhead, because they help keep the students' attention. The use of realia in the classroom will make the subject matter more comprehensible for my students. We need a class set of colored pencils so the students can create colorful science journals and a pencil sharpener, as well as transparencies. We also need a rock kit with igneous and sedimentary rocks, and minerals. My students can look at these rocks and create pictures of them in their journals. These supplies will significantly aid my students in learning Earth Science. Pictures and hands-on learning make all the difference! Thank you very much.
