The Frozen Zoo: Unlocking Hidden DNA Needham Broughton High School is a Magnet High School that serves Raleigh, North Carolina and surrounding Wake County. Broughton High School offers a variety of Advance Placement and Honor courses throughout their academic curriculum. Broughton serves a rich diversity of students from a wide range of social and educational background. Broughton High School serves about 20% of students with free lunch and offers a behavioral, academic, and social rich support network for student. Student's experience a unique classroom in which every concept studied in Biology is alive and living within the classroom. The classroom called The Living Zone offers students hands-on activities with living organisms and demonstrations that expand student academic knowledge about Biology and Life Sciences. 10th & 11th graders take Biology as a core course requirement in the State of North Carolina. Electrophoresis is a technique used in the laboratory that results in the separation of charged molecules. In this investigation we are separating molecules of DNA. Using Gel electrophoresis techniques and given the impact of biotechnology on todays society, it is imperative that students be familiar with molecular biology techniques such as gel electrophoresis, which is used in DNA profiling. For those teachers who lack access to equipment needed to create such relevant lab experiences for their students, this simulation provides a hands-on learning experience that exposes them to the basic principles of biotechnology. Students will be able to describe the role of restriction enzymes and how they function in living organisms. Students will learn how to explain how gel electrophoresis separates DNA molecules present in a mixture Students will produce graphic organizers. Students will learn how to describe the relationship between fragment size and migration rate in a gel and analyze separate DNA fragments with gel electrophoresis The goal studying frozen DNA explains the impact of gel electrophoresis on today's society and it's application to biotechnology and crime scene investigation. The 2 main objectives students experience involve: Information Systems - Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies. Technology - Students will apply technological knowledge and skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems to satisfy human DNA models. Thank you for your support!
