Help Mr. S.

The students in my 8th Grade Physical Science class at John Philip Sousa Middle School in Southeast Washington, DC typically fit under the categories of "under-privileged" and "at-risk." Sousa, like many struggling urban schools, is severely under funded and generally lacks the resources to enhance learning in the classroom. Despite this setting, however, and thanks to the generosity of previous donors, my students ARE fortunate to have access to computers connected to the internet for use in class. My students perform computer-based activities in groups about once every week, ranging from online science to creating Excel spreadsheets that graph data from real experiments conducted in the classroom. They create documents individually and collaboratively in groups, and are always excited to see their work come alive in a professional manner on the computer screen. Unfortunately, the full potential of this digital approach to learning is yet to be reached in my classroom. Students of all ages love to see hard evidence of their successes, and my students are certainly no exception. In order to fully celebrate their achievements, it is essential that my students have the ability to print out their work, rather than simply saving them to the classroom hard drives. Instead, I am eager to give them the ability to print their work out immediately after they produce it so that they can keep it, share it, or post it on the walls of the classroom. We need a network-ready laser printer that will enable my students to print from any computer in the room quickly, easily, and with high quality. The powerful learning in which they engage on the computers will then become tangible, and the hard copies of the evidence of this learning will serve as reminders of it far after the activities themselves are over. In a school where resources are generally scarce, my students deserve to be able to take full advantage of the resources they have. Once my students are able to create concrete examples of their professional-quality digital work in class with a classroom laser printer, the impact of what technology we do have for them will reach another level.
