Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This proposal is for a sophomore biology class. I have been teaching for a short amount of time and every year I am faced with teaching students of all backgrounds cell biology, a subject they do not seem to be interested in for some reason. I have been searching for a more engaging way for them to study cell development, differentiation, and specialization. At last I have found it. With the Medaka kits the students will be able to collect eggs from fish and observe them as they grow and develop in the rearing solution. By watching the eggs develop they will have a greater understanding of the phases cells go through in their development and specialization. The Elodea densa will be cultured with the adult Medaka and later with the developing fry, increasing the survivability of both. The Elodea leaves will also be used as part of the cell biology unit. The students will be able to investigate the cellular structure of plant cells as well as cytoplasmic streaming. Cytoplasmic streaming and cell development are the WOW factor (when the students say "WOW! Look at that")I am looking for in this lesson. We are a Title I school and the meager lab fees I can collect will not even begin to fund this project. I am very excited about this project and hope someone can help me help my students. If we can go forward with this project, the students would have a better working knowledge of the cell, its structure and function. As a bonus the students would learn the proper care of animals even if they are being used for research (the animals not the students). This would lead to better standardized test scores and may spark an interest in a budding scientist.
