Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 7th and 8th grade humanities in the South Bronx at Fannie Lou Hamer Middle School. In my school we have 40 minutes a day of quiet reading time. During this time every student reads a book of their choice quietly and then journals about their reading. I think that it is one of the nicest times of the day, a chance for students to explore literature and find the kinds of books that really appeal to them. As a class we share what we are reading, and our thoughts about the book. The students give recommendations and often trade books when they are done. It is also a chance for me to guide them in challenging themselves to read on or slightly above their reading level. I keep track of the books that the students read and how difficult they find each one. One frustration that I have encountered is the struggle of my Spanish-speaking students. They can often read on a higher level in Spanish than in English and they get frustrated when they are reading lower level books than their friends. I was inspired one day when a student brought an "A Series of Unfortunate Events" book from home that was in Spanish. The book was passed around the class many times and so I went out and bought some more. This made me think that it would be a great idea to have a Spanish Language library in the classroom. I have included sets of 6th-8th grade level books. The students have said that they think this is a great idea and look forward the additions to the library.
