My Students

My students need this equipment for use in the gymnasium as part of our Healthy Body Healthy Mind project. The school is in a low-income neighborhood and the children often eat only junk food. This is to increase their awareness of the importance of healthy living.

Our children are from diverse cultures and many are not exposed to physical activities which will enhance their educational and physical development.

The school has nearly 600 students from K-5 speaking six languages and it is often difficult for them to communicate verbally. I find that they are encouraged and are enthusiastic when they are in the gym because they can follow directions more easily. Limited equipment lessens the progress they should make during their time in elementary school.

My Project

Children in our school will learn coordination skills (eye-hand coordination), develop small muscles, and endurance. They will play basketball, use hop a long balls for balancing and body movement to a rhythm in a prescribed space. Completion of tasks through focused activities will enhance learning and widen their horizons.Team work and leadership skills will also be practiced.

Because these students are from cultures other than the American culture and traditions, our program encourage parent participation into becoming activists in their school community.

They learn from their children what are some of the acceptable behaviors in this society. Our school hopes that the skills learnt here will evolve into life learning experiences for both the children and their parents.
