Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you're not familiar with Missoula Children's Theatre, they are the largest children's theatre in the world. Missoula Children's Theatre specializes in bringing the Arts to communities like mine- communities that have virtually no Arts programs and whose kids have no opportunities to perform in front of their peers.
Many years back I was one of these actors who traveled the country bringing the Arts to impoverished communities. Guess what? Now I work for an impoverished community! In the Back of the Yards here on the South Side of Chicago, my school has no music program, no dance, theatre, nothing. We also have...no money. The cost to bring Missoula Children's Theatre out here includes the open group audition, the full week of rehearsals, two public performances and three enrichment workshops.
What's cool about MCT is they bring everything with them: costumes, lights, sound, scripts, sets- and they direct and perform in the show! This is an opportunity for my students to learn life skills, overcoming fears and obstacles, and to discover something within themselves. Maybe they have a singing or acting ability that they never knew existed. Maybe they like helping with makeup or costumes. I'll bet many of them have these hidden talents- because they've never had the opportunity to discover it!
What I think is most valuable is this opportunity to stand up in front of their peers, confidently. In my school community, being heard and standing out is just not rewarded enough. I'd like to give them the opportunity to face those fears and tell them it's okay to be good at something. Don't be afraid. With some assistance, we can give them that chance.
