Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a math teacher, and I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach a group of talented and dedicated group of 12 special education 8th students in the Bronx. I observe my students every day, working hard, being nice to each other, and becoming more intelligent and informed citizens both of the school and of their neighborhoods. However, despite all of the academic progress that my students and I have made so far this year, each day that passes is one more day closer to their Math Region test, which will take place in March 2007, and one less day preparing my students for their big test. Because my students have special needs, they need special instruction to meet those needs. My students are quite eager to learn every day, but in addition to learning 8th grade concepts which will be covered in their March math Region test, they are also re-learning, and very often learning for the first time, concepts that they learned or were supposed to learn in previous grades. In short, my students and I have "double duty" - we are learning the 8th grade standards while at the same time learning basic skills that they have failed to retain throughout the years. As such, I, being their math teacher, need to fit as much math and work time as possible into the 90 minute block that I have with my students. I would like to set up centers in my room, with one center focusing on "remediation skills" (basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills), one center focusing on "eighth grade content done independently", and one center focusing on "eighth grade content done jointly with me." **This is where I need your help! While I already have the materials and supplies needed to service my "remediation" and "eighth grade content done with the teacher" centers, I do not have the workbooks that I need to supply my "eighth grade content done independently" center. I am requesting a set of workbooks, entitled VersaTiles, which follows the 8th grade curriculum and will allow my students the opportunity to explore algebraic concepts on their own and with their peers. The workbooks are designed so that students can get the practice that they need to master 8th grade concepts. It is very important for me that my students master the grade level content that their fellow eighth graders are also learning and not to fall below state expectations because they have special needs. Dividing the classroom into three separate centers will prove immensely beneficial for students, I believe, because they master remedial skills AND eighth grade math content at the same time. Moreover, they will be allowed to work at their own pace, both independently and with each other. Because they will have so many avenues in which to learn - in groups, on their own, through activities or through worksheets - they will learn the material. Please help my students become the Math Scholars that they want to be!
