Ours is a rural economically challenged high school. We have a 3D base unit, 4 pairs of glasses, and a human anatomy 3D lab. We would like to continue to add to our equipment so that we can accommodate a full class. In the long run, virtual reality labs will reduce lab costs and engage students
My students are hardworking, intelligent, and full of ambition.
Approximately 60% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches. It is extremely important for us to provide the most up to date classroom equipment and experiences. In many cases my students feel second rate because we live in a small rural community that isn't always able to provide the same type of equipment larger schools with greater resources can offer. But despite their feelings of missing out on important resources, the support that the students receive through Donors Choose gives them a sense of importance and pride. It means a lot to them to realize that people all across the country want them to succeed.
I feel that it is my job to encourage my students to pursue careers in science. The materials that I am requesting and make "science fact" as fascinating as "science fiction"
My Project
The 3D labs and the wired glasses will make it possible for my students to complete dissections in a challenging and fun way. Two added benefits are the virtual labs can be reused semester after semester, and it is no longer necessary to use preserved specimens for dissections. I want my students to learn about the living body and we will do a limited amount of wet labs, however, I believe that it is critical that we do not desensitize our young people at the same time that we are trying to teach them to see the wonder of living things.
This project is important to every class in the science department.
It will encourage my students to look at the
more glamorous side of science. Access to this type of equipment will encourage more students to pursue science careers. Not only will students be examining ancient biological structures, but they will doing it with futuristic technology.
