Reading Our Way to Excellence

My students need quality novels to fuel their interest and desire to read by providing engaging characters, plots and themes which will captivate their imaginations. They need 35 copies each of "Hunger Games" and "Flowers for Algernon."

My Students

All my life I've had a love affair with books. I often joke with my students about going outside to play Tag as a kid and getting teased about coming outside with a book that I read when I got caught. It is that love of reading that I seek to instill in my students with quality literature.

My students are 6/7/8 grade minority students who are primarily residents of New York.

The motto at our school is "We Are Excellence." My students are indeed "Excellence." They are intelligent, charming, talented young people who have often not been provided with the skills and resources necessary to learn and grow as readers. As such, I am currently working on developing unit and lesson plans which can challenge and motivate them to grow as readers and writers. In a setting such as my school, this goal has many challenges. While some students are proficient orally, they often lack strong reading comprehension and writing skills. My philosophy, however, is not to water-down the content of my lessons, but to provide resources and support that will aid my students in reaching higher and digging deeper into themselves to learn and grow as scholars.

My Project

In order to accomplish this task I need resources that lend themselves to that type of challenge. This means more and more books that have strong characters, plots, themes, and settings, etc. For this year, I want to challenge them in various literary genres and seek funding for the following books: Hunger Games (35 copies) Flowers for Algernon (35 copies) These resources will be used by my students to enable them to participate in literature circles and guided reading sessions that will enhance their reading comprehension abilities. My students are also required to complete various writing pieces for publication a month based on the books they read, and as such, their access to these books will enable them to complete this requirement in quality fashion.

It is my quest to enhance my class' reading and writing skills and enable them to live up to their school's motto.

Securing these resources will enable my students to think critically and develop strong analytical skills, which will transcend the classroom into everyday life, enabling them to truly be "Excellence."
