My Students

Have you ever tried to do a landscape painting while sitting down, or a model painting when you have to keep moving your focal point up and down, up and down. Well my students have to do that all the time, and because of this obstacle they are not capable of doing the best that they can.

My students range in age from PK – 5th grade and we live in our Nation's Capital, the Mecca of museums and art galleries.

They are budding artist in their own right and have the capabilities to have their work hung next to the Master's in these great halls. I constantly compare them to great masters of all-time; I don't want to be the one that overlooks the next Leonardo, Michelangelo or Raphael. It gives them the confidence to excel beyond their wildest imagination. We are in title-one school but you will never hear me mention that to them. They already have a fixed deck and my role as a art teacher is to try to level the playing field so that they have the same opportunities as anyone else and many time that starts with the resources; because they already have greater than or equal the talent level of ALL of their peers across the country.

My Project

These easels are more than just a stand for them to make paintings on. These easels are going to be the corner stone for great work for years to come. When you have sub-par things you treat them with a subpar mentality and you usually get a subpar performance. Shiny doesn’t always mean better but in the eyes of students it shows them that someone is slightly interested in what they are doing. With the easels towering in the classroom we will be able to create large scale paintings on stretched canvas. In the past our large scale paintings were limited to rolled craft paper thumb tacked to our make shift easels (the wall). Landscapes: check, full -model painting: check, proper posture while painting: check. Once everything falls in to place we all have one less thing to worry about and the concentration can move from materials to methods. How to draw this line, how to emphasize that shadow, how to mix that color will be the focus as we move from primitive means to innovative concepts and ideas.

Yes, we do have a Leonardo, Michelangelo or Raphael in our midst and it is my responsibility to utilize each and every resource within my means to help cultivate their talents and abilities.

I have made the most of all of my resources, now I look to you for your support to get us over the top. Not support of me but support of my students so that that may reach their full potential. With your financial support you will be assisting my students in their own educational reform through the arts.
