The idea of planting and nurturing a garden has my first graders "blooming" with excitement! We plan to plant a raised garden bed and Earth Boxes with easy to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers for a butterfly garden!
My first grade students come from a very low-economic background.
Around 70% of our school's students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Even though my students live in a rural community, many of them have never planted or worked in a garden.
My Project
As part of our gardening project, we plan to introduce desirable insect habitats and organic pest control. We will be raising butterflies to feed on our flowers and ladybugs and praying mantises to eat harmful garden pests. This will provide students with a closer look at the wonderful world of insects.
We need lady bug, praying mantis, and butterfly kits to house and hatch our helpful insects. A butterfly poster will help us identify other winged visitors, and the plant and insect activity tubs and book selections will enhance the life science learning experiences. The healthy eating book pack will also help my students understand why the vegetables and herbs they are growing are important for healthy lives.
Plant and insect life cycles will come to life as part of this gardening project.
The pleasure of digging in the dirt and growing things will satisfy the souls of many young students, and following the metamorphosis of insects will captivate their minds. They will change and grow right along with the plants and creatures in this fascinating project!
