This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We need CD players and headphones with microphones to improve our fluency. Comprehension is directly linked to fluency, so we need to get to work!

My students are 2nd graders in a large urban school district in Illinois.

95% of our students receive free and reduced priced lunch. Our school is full of students who are eager to learn but don't always have support at home, and teachers who go above and beyond for our students but don't always have the necessary resources to give our kids the very best education.

My Project

My students need 4 individual CD players to listen to books on CD, and 2 headsets with microphones to record themselves reading. My students will use these resources on a daily basis. The headphones will be attached to two laptops I have in my classroom (they were generously donated). I subscribe to an online reading program that allows my students to listen to, read, and answer comprehension questions about stories at their individual levels. One of the great benefits of this program that I have not been able to utilize is the capability to record my students while they read, so I can analyze the errors. With these headphones, I will finally be able to reap the benefits of this program and help my students even more. The personal CD players will be used in addition to a traditional listening center. I want my students to be able to choose their own books to listen to and enjoy. Also, the listening center currently takes a long time to set up and take apart, but with individual CD players, my students will be able to maximize their time reading.

Listening to reading and practicing reading orally are researched-based strategies to improve student fluency. Getting headphones with microphones and personal CD players will truly enhance my students' education. Your generosity is very much appreciated!
