As technology advances in the world around us, sometimes it seems to forget about entering into classrooms! With budget cuts all around us, technology is a much forgotten necessity. An iPod Touch can bring us to the 21st century.
Our school is in a rural town in Utah surrounded by farms and grass fields.
Even though our school seems far from all of technologies greatest advances, our first grade classroom does not want to be left out anymore. In my classroom we would love to learn through technology and explore as much as we can. I would like to put away my tape player and advance my classroom's learning with an iPod Touch.
My Project
By receiving one iPod Touch, my students can explore the world of technology by listening to books, classical music, poems, or even watch a video about a historical figure. The iPod Touch has over 50 FREE educational applications that include math, language arts, music, memory games, Social Studies, and much more. By just listening to children's books on the iPod, the students will be advancing their fluency and comprehension skills. Students in the 21st century need to be engaged by technology and to be honest, they are not too engaged by the tape player in our classroom. They don't even know how to use it properly, They do already know how to work mom and dad's iPod and would be completely engaged using it in the classroom for their learning. Whether it's listening to Mozart during our art activity or playing a math game during centers; my students will be occupied and they won't even know they're learning!
This is the 21st century!
Students are no longer engaged by the "paper and pencil" approach. They love to learn through technology and an iPod Touch in our classroom can do just that. I believe that education needs to change with the times. No more tape player that barely works. I can only image my students going home to tell their parents, "Mom and dad, today I listened to a poem on the iPod touch and I still remember it! Do you want to hear?" Now is the time to teach with technology.
