My Students

Changing the world and standing up for what you believe in can a be a difficult thing to do as a high school teenager. Our Multicultural Studies course has a main theme of over coming personal differences, and looking for the commonalities that we all have to make this a better world to live.

The class focuses mostly on racial issues, but also deals with women's issues, religious toleration, sexual orientation and the development of these 9-12 graders' leadership skills.

I try to use different books and stories to focus the class discussion on tolerance and acceptance so my students can better understand the world and people around them.

My Project

The school community is not very diverse, but over the past few years has started to see a change in demographics. Many students do not understand other cultures, nor have they been exposed to them. One of the groups of people the students tend to turn a blind eye on are those from Africa. We spend 3 weeks covering this topic and the class does not have a text book, or up to date materials for the students. The book I would like to use is a fist hand account of a boy soldier living and fighting in Sierra Leone. The story will help students understand the hardships of children outside of the US and embrace an understanding of problems throughout the world.

This is a great way for you to help educate these students in African culture, and understand some of the social and economic problems of the world through a first hand account of a child's life experiences.
