Imagine the scene; outside there are walls riddled with graffiti, students loitering the hallways, street noises filling the air but enter the gym and over 45 students calmly position themselves in tree pose. The students move through a range of yoga positions breathing and stretching their muscles. Soothing music fills the air as the students relax and experience something that they have never before. I have been teaching yoga in my high school aerobics class for the past 2 years. I have done so with no mats; the students simply perform on the gym floor. The class would be more effective if we had yoga mats but it has been hard to convince the department to get mats with our budget. My students love yoga. They often ask, "Miss ____, when are we going to do yoga again?" They say that it relaxes them and that they stretch and strengthen their muscles. Most of my students are very stressed with home life and obstacles of living in the inner city. This activity is beneficial to the students for overall fitness, both body and mind. Furthermore, the students are exposed to a new activity of physical fitness not usually taught in this demographic, predominately Hispanic and Asian. It opens their minds to culture and movement that is out of the ordinary PE routine. The materials that we would need are Yoga mats and music. I have classes of 55 + four periods a day so over 200 students would be benefiting from this project. I would really like to continue the yoga experience with my students and we would be able to execute more positions if we had the materials needed. Thank you for your attention and time.
