Wonderland(s)

My students need a classroom set of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in order to continue our adventure into worlds that can be explored and interpreted as potential lands of wonder.

My Students

If the world of literature is a wonderland, this has sadly become a lost culture, a world many young people no longer think is worth venturing into. Althought I'm hoping to show students that literature will open up new cognitive spaces, I don't have the books I need to lead them there and guide them through.

Our high school could be considered its own wonderland of a unique group of diverse individuals.

These young apprentices come from a range of ethnic, cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds which makes every classroom an adventure into the fascinating minds of a multiplicity of perspectives, experiences, and realities. This makes every hour we spend together precious. As we continue to explore new cognitive spaces together, we learn something from each other. In the process, we celebrate the diversity of learning styles, individual belief systems, cultural backgrounds, and unlimited possibilities. It is the students who make the school what it is, which is a world within a world, and one of which I am honored to be a part. They have so much to share and are willing to offer that the real tragedy in their lives is the lack of resources to take them further into more wondrous lands of the literature that connects to their lives as they continue to make sense of it.

My Project

We began our journey into wonderland(s) by reading "Frankenstein" and examining why something stirs the human soul to explore unknown territories. It was my plan to transition into "Alice in Wonderland" in order to continue the dialogue and take it to another level in relation to another text. A classic piece of literature that connects to multiple themes we are exploring in this course, I was disappointed to discover that although the novel is on the approved grade level list, our site no longer has any copies. As we continue to embrace the future(s) (im)perfect, I hope to provide my students with a diversity of literary experiences in order to embrace new cognitive spaces, confront culture, and interpret the wonderland(s) that beckon on multiple levels. As we read we will continue to engage in interpretive discussions that examine the greater significance of the novel in an effort to establish connects between the text, the self, and the world. The book is another adventure!

This is a newly designed course that I believe will have impact on how students embrace literature and analyze discourse.

By procuring a class set of the novel this year, I will have the opportunity to explore it with this group of students as planned as well as look forward to sharing it again with a new group of students next year. Though most people know the story, few people have ever read the novel. It is a literary masterpiece that will have bring the real story to life! That's impact.
