My Students

Our school believes strongly in working as a small community to support one another as we strive to achieve our goals. To that end, all students take an advisory class in which they endeavor to become active readers, provide community service and learn how to help change the world around them.

I am happy to say that over the last two years, I have had the privilege of watching my advisory class become a family.

We engage in weekly discussions about topical issues amongst our local, national and global communities. We also regularly share our successes and struggles and then offer both moral and practical support to one another. As you know, our country is in a time of crisis on many levels. However, these young people are extremely motivated, hardworking and up to the challenge of turning things around. All of my students have wanted to go on to college since they were young children. They have brilliant dreams and fight every day to get one step closer to their goals. Unfortunately, now that they are in their junior year, they are beginning to realize that a college education may be beyond their financial means. They are trying to keep their hopes alive, but given how steadily expensive college costs are becoming, it is difficult for to ward off despair.

My Project

Therefore, I would like very much to provide each of my students with the Scholarship Handbook 2010 by College Board. With these books, I will be able to conduct class lessons on several college related topics including: understanding the qualifications that colleges are looking for, how to search for scholarships that suit each individual child’s needs, how to properly fill out applications, and the art of college and scholarship essay writing. I am also requesting 13 book titles that will be added to our classroom library. My students are required to read 25 books every year. I believe that these titles will be of great interest to my students. Finally, we will also need some basic supplies, such as a timer, mini staplers, and purple copy paper, that my students and I could really use.

Your help will enable my students to further build vital research, writing and reading skills that they will rely on time and again in the years to come.

Furthermore, by funding this project, you will be empowering them to continue fighting for their dreams. This in itself will send them a clear message that they are not alone in their desire to make our world a better place. Together we can make lots of great things happen!
