Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Imagine never being able to explore other cultures because you simply do not have the ability to. My students are in this situation. They live in lower Manhattan and many come from families with limited resources. I want to open their eyes to the world's cultures to enhance them as leaders.
My students are a great bunch of kids who attend a public NYC middle school.
There are about 150 of them and they range in grades 6 to 8 and represent a multitude of nationalities. They are eager to learn and explore the world but have never been given the opportunity. This class is going to help them expand their view of the world while promoting positive attitudes. It is difficult to ask them what they want to do when they grow up because they simply do not have the knowledge of the world. I hope to be able to give them a well rounded multicultural view giving them the ability to ultimately make an impact on this world.
My Project
The resources requested include books and art supplies that are to aid us in our exploration of ASIA. We are going to look at several countries using the books requested. Additionally, they are going to create things that reflect the Asian culture. Our first assignment is going to be to read the book A Thousand Paper Cranes, and try to make just that to display in our school.
I am a first year teacher with limited resources and my school does not have the ability to help very much. I do not have a classroom and will be traveling from room to room and need a cart to store all of our items. This will be useful for years to come. I hope to enhance our lessons with music from the cultures we are exploring and need a music playing system. I also want the children to understand what we are studying and need a map to put the locations in perspective. The students are very eager to learn, but with the limited resources it will be difficult, these items are necessary to deliver the best education to them, they deserve it!!
This project is near to my heart as I believe there is a serious lack of multicultural knowledge among today's youth.
This class will help them, but in the long run it will help all the other people that they come in contact with. I know I am asking for a lot, however, this is the first time this course is being offered and we have nothing to use. Your donations would be greatly appreciated and help children for years to come. In order to change tomorrow, we need to educate today!
