My Students

"The only thing I like reading is the newest Time for Kids magazine." When a struggling reader said this to me last year, I knew I had made the right decision when subscribing to the magazine! My students loved these magazines and reread them over and over again because they got to keep them!

My students are wonderful, smart, funny, interesting, and always yearning to learn new things.

They each struggle with learning disabilities and behavior disorders. While teaching them to read is often a struggle, the rewards are well worth it. Often, my students are teased about being "special ed." I have made it my mission to spread the truth about intelligence and learning differences throughout our school community. I openly discuss with my class how important it is for the world to have people like them who learn and think differently. After all, don't we owe all of the most important and amazing inventions and discoveries to those people who think and learn outside of the norm!? During a school year, my goal is for my students to internalize that they really have "exceptional learning." I would rather teach my students than any other children in the building. They are the most sensitive, interesting people I know. I don't let them forget it!

My Project

Often, the only material my students truly felt excited about reading were the Time for Kids and Weekly Reader magazines. The feeling of ownership made their face beamed, as I always let them keep their magazines. We discussed all of the articles and researched their content further on the Internet. They really make the world come to life for my kids. Understanding current events is a powerful tool for any child. Unfortunately, my students do not learn about the world around them form their parents. The televisions at home are more often used for video games. These weekly magazines are colorful and easy to read, while being highly interesting and engaging for my students. Learning a fact about King Tut from a Time for Kids made my students interested in all of ancient Egypt. I was able to do a unit on ancient Egypt because they were so interested. The magazines also have an online feature that allows us to access content on an interactive Smartboard!

There are few things more powerful than a 4th grader teaching his or her family about current events at the dinner table!

Many families told me that they learned from their child, who "must have read through that magazine ten times over the weekend!" As a donor, you will be giving the gift of knowledge and current world events to children from families who struggle. These magazines also trigger a thirst for more knowledge and a desire to learn about the world. What is more important than that?
