Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year teacher at Bushwick Leaders' High School, a small school looking to provide quality education to all students, regardless of prior academic performance. The school is small, with only 297 students, enabling teachers such as myself to develop relationships with all of our students. Unfortunately, being a small school, we do not have the funding needed to provide supplies for all of our classes, especially in the science department. Our school opened three years ago, and our first senior class will be graduating next year. In order to prepare these students for college, I will be teaching an AP Chemistry course, allowing students to gain college credits while they are still in high school. However, we have limited lab supplies. I am in need of a set of burets, many beakers, test tubes and test tube racks, triple beam balances, chemicals, ring stands, clamps, and AP Chemistry Review books. Our school does not have an actual lab, and all work is done in the classroom with the limited supplies I have now. Currently, I teach Regents Chemistry and Marine Biology. My students love Chemistry, and would love to have the opportunity to gain college credits in a class that they enjoy. As of now, we will most likely have two classes of approximately 15 students per class participating in the program. I sincerely hope that we are able to get the necessary supplies for this class. I feel that my students will benefit from their lab experiences, and will be better prepared to enter the competitive college world.
