My Students

What are your memories of being taught math? Did you always use worksheets? Were your math lessons hands-on? This class deserves great math memories. They are preschoolers with various physical or environmental obstacles. This means that may already be at a disadvantage for school readiness.

I teach preschoolers who are often asked to engage in small group learning activities.

I teach in a high risk public school in an urban city. During the first years of school, children should feel that learning is exciting and be engaged in their learning. I have noticed that they pay attention to math concepts when they have something in their hands. The children love counting, sorting, and using manipulatives. When I teach various themes it is hard to imagine tiny blocks and bears representing flowers, bugs, dinosaurs, and other themes that we discuss during the year. I have tried to collect and construct various things to count however; the children seem to respond to the commercial manipulative counters the best. I would love to offer an assortment of manipulatives to go with the books we read and the themes we talk about. The manipulatives would also be placed in math exploratory bags that can be sent home along with books, suggested activities, and mini projects.

My Project

Early childhood experts have reported that using concrete materials such as manipulatives help children develop a sense of number and operations. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) strongly advocates the use of manipulatives. Children seem to learn best when they have visuals that they can manipulate. Many of the caregivers of the children I teach have told me that they do not have fond memories of math at school and they only remember disliking math worksheets. I would like to show the families that math can be fun and how much we use math in real life. The manipulatives will allow the children and families to work on solving math problems cooperatively by actually manipulating the various objects to solve the problem. Thus my children will be able to practice social skills at the same time. Lastly, the manipulative materials will help develop small muscles in the children’s fingers and help them develop eye-hand coordination.

In this evolving world of gadgets and technology, we teachers, have to constantly find new enticing ways to teach concepts.

I believe that if we can grab a child's interest in learning at an early age we will win half of the battle. I would like the manipulatives to be my weapon of choice in the battle to teach math concepts to my preschoolers. Thank you for your consideration.
