I teach 3rd grade math in an urban school district in Michigan. Ninety percent of our students are African-American and live at or below poverty level. Despite many obstacles, our school continues to meet AYP due to highly motivated teachers and students who strive to improve.
My students are highly motivated and love learning using manipulatives.
Unfortunately manipulatives in our classroom is very limited and worksheets often are the primary source of learning. Research has determined this is often the worst way to learn. Worksheets fail to keep students motivated and students soon lose focus.
With these fraction tiles, students would gain hands-on experience in the classroom, which will help them comprehend this challenging subject while having fun. The tiles are color coded which reinforces connections between equivalent amounts in different shapes. These tiles are perfect for hands-on exploration of equivalencies. It also helps them learn responsibility by taking charge of their own set. The magnetic apple fractions provides a real-world tool for introducing parts of a whole, in addition to addition and subtraction with fractions.
These manipulatives will provide the students with a solid understanding of a complex subject.
The ability to visualize and touch the fraction tiles will ensure students will retain fractions in their long term memory. Providing a solid introduction to fractions will serve them well as they progress to middle school.
