Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember all the creative ideas you had as a child? Students are given plenty of opportunity to learn facts and figures, but I want to give them the opportunity to explore their own minds and imagination. Using these resources, students will create their own original invention.

I teach in a 5th grade regular education class with 80% ELL and 25% special education students.

Our school is located in a high-need, low-income community where English is NOT the dominant language. My students work very hard to meet the state's academic expectations, and hands-on activities such as these provide them access to knowledge that can not be gained in a text. Students work with new vocabulary and concepts in a meaningful way. Also, students, who normally struggle, can participate with their peers in an activity which develops their confidence and sense of accomplishment.

My Project

In these science explorations, students will use the book, I Wonder Why My Zipper Has Teeth, to investigate inventions of the past as inspiration to create their own inventions. They will use wire, batteries, light bulbs, magnets, and various tools to discover concepts of electricity, magnetism, and simple machines. Finally, they will apply this knowledge to their own creation. Students will have to analyze a problem in their own life, and create a solution to that problem.

I want to teach my students that learning is not answering a question on a test, but applying their understanding to real-life problems.

Problem-solving skills reach beyond any one concept, and will enable my students to solve the variety of challenges they encounter. The resources I have requested in this proposal will enable my students to develop life skills as well as academic knowledge.
