Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's hard to teach children about current events when newspapers are filled with articles that may not be age appropriate. My students are drawn to reading newspaper articles that evoke conversation, debate and opinion. Yet, the challenge is that newspapers may contain adult language and content.

My students are very eager to learn about the world they live in.

Throughout the school year I have often found them reading newspapers and asking me for explanations or simply wanting to share their opinion. I found it to be a great way to show my students what life is like in places that are different from their community as well as what life is like in their own community from various viewpoints. This was a great learning experience for me too! For a teacher, this was an extraordinary way to see how students think critically. I found something that no standardized test could show me; a child's understanding of the world they live in. The school my students attend is a low-income, urban public school. Though the neighborhood can be rough at times, our school is a warm, nurturing place where children truly feel welcome.

My Project

I am looking forward to integrating the Junior Scholastic News in the curriculum as an extension to the Social Studies curriculum. I am planning to use the monthly reader every week. We will read articles and use the text to generate various educational projects like debates, reports, artistic projects and personal reflections. I feel that students will leave our school with a mature sense of the world they live in. They will be able to use these skills for higher level thinking, giving them an edge to see "beyond the surface". These skills will propel their educational aspirations beyond middle school and high school and hopefully in college.

This project is extremely important because as a teacher, I feel that it is important to teach children not just what the curriculum demands, but also what they are eager to learn.

Reading about current events, illuminating their minds about their own role in the world and the importance of having a valid opinion is something that I would love to evoke in my students.
