My Students

Imagine going to Kindergarten and sitting on a concrete floor after losing your home in a flood and spending your last year before school wondering if you would have a school open near your home. The materials requested will provide my students with a sense of security and belonging in the classroom

The students in my Kindergarten class were deeply affected by the Iowa floods of 2008.

The majority lost their homes and most, if not all, of their belongings. Our school was flooded, and remained closed for the 2008-2009 school year while it was repaired. The challenges these children have overcome, and those they continue to face, are enormous. Any sense of having a place to belong greatly impacts these students' self esteem and sense that there are people and places they can go to feel safe and secure.

My Project

My Kindergarten students currently have a solid-color rug (which we received in January; school started in August) on which to sit during large group activities. The majority of the children in my class lost their homes and possessions in the flood of 2008, and have a strong need to have a space of their own, which does not have to be shared (or taken away, as they have experienced) by anything or anyone else. Currently, the carpet we use is marked with duct tape to show each child where his/her spot is; the children could not effectively choose their own spot, or remain out of other children's space, without these clearly defined boundaries. While duct tape has been somewhat effective at defining individual students' space, it is very unappealing visually, and is often ripped off. The rug requested will give each child his/her own space, without the constant need to put down new duct tape. The Lego table and art center will provide relief from the stress they experience daily.

Donating to this project will allow the children in my class, and in classes to come, to feel as if they have a place where they belong.

This is extremely important to these children who have lost everything, often including the emotional availability of adults at home who are still recovering from the flood. These items help replace those destroyed in 1st floor classrooms which sustained 3 feet of water damage, leading to the need to have the school closed all last school year. Thank you!!!
