My Students

Often times, the obstacles and delays we face in our classrooms actually are opportunities to contemplate creative ways of giving. Rather than wait for my students to obtain the supplies they need to complete their English curriculum, I am opting to seek the resources using Donors Choose.

When I began the school year, my caseload of special needs students consisted of 21 9th-grade young men classified with emotional disturbance.

Three of my students since have transferred to other schools (two of them since I first posted my welcome note to my website), leaving me currently with a caseload of 18. They collectively are fond of engaging in mental gymnastics, are intellectually curious--which makes them especially receptive to receiving new information--are physically energetic, and, of course, are emotionally volatile at times. They have taught me a lot, have influenced me to develop more patience, and have prompted me to reflect more on my pedagogy. They attend one of Maryland's public high schools and are integrated into the general education setting for half of the school day. I teach them English and Social Studies for the latter part of the day, so my challenge is to keep them engaged enough to experience academic growth daily.

My Project

For this final quarter, my students will complete an "Advocacy & Persuasion" unit, during which they will examine three primary documents--all chosen by the school district for their persuasive elements--and record "quick-writes" in a Reporter/Writer notebook (R/W notebook), after reading, re-reading, and responding to multiple questions relating to the persuasive power of the documents. The binders, filler papers, and dividers are necessary to create the R/W notebooks. To avoid unnecessary delays, I need to have a supply of pens to keep in the classroom, thus eliminating the daily "pen drama" that currently is commonplace. My students work most effectively from individual packets, so the copy paper would enable me to continue to provide them with this accommodation at a time when the school's paper supply is dwindling. Finally, I plan to give the flash drives as rewards to students of the month for both classes for March, April, and May. The six drives are for this sole purpose.

Attempts at implementing the Reporter/Writer notebooks, as envisioned by the curriculum writers, were not successful in the past, as I relied too heavily on the students to obtain the appropriate supplies.

As they begin their transition to 10th grade, I want them to master the use of a tool that likely will be central to the English curricula at subsequent grade levels. Most importantly, I aspire to build their confidence and skills as adept readers, critical thinkers, and effective writers.
