My Students

Do you remember the first time you saw a band march by and cheered when you saw the percussion section? My students could be that percussion section if we had the equipment.

My classroom is a community day program.

This means my students are not able to be successful in a normal school environment. My students do not have the opportunity to participate in the same performing arts classes as their peers. Our classroom is a one room portable in a field behind the football field. We are required to remain in class from 8am until 3pm. We have almost no equipment or supplies for enrichment activities to encourage learning in our classroom. My students, like all 13-18 year old kids, love music.

My Project

I am requesting an electronic drum kit because I know it will help my students become more successful. I was a percussionist all through high school and into college. This kit will allow the students to learn about percussion instruments as well as how to play the various types of drums and cymbals. It has been proven that students who are successful in music have greater skills in math. Percussion is an important part of all types of music, understanding how it fits with the whole music is a gift that will benefit my students their entire lives.

Playing in my high school band program really helped me to develop more confidence in my self and gain an appreciation for music.

I was able to create feelings and emotions. I realized the power music can have on a person's emotions and feelings. I want to share this life long gift with my students.
