FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Boggs's classroom raised $804

This project is fully funded

I teach Spanish and coach bowling at a large urban high school in Chicago. It is a wonderful place, full of eager students and stellar athletes. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, bowling is on the chopping block. Bowling is an expensive sport. It requires equipment and lane fees and for school teams, transportation to the bowling alleys. Most good bowlers have their own equipment and shoes. The members of the boys’ team do have their own equipment thanks to funding last year from DonorsChoose.org and we're working on ways to get equipment for the girls. But right now, to compete this season, our biggest dilemma is funding the lane fees for practices and games. The students have raised money to cover our largest cost (transportation) by selling raffle tickets and other fund raising items. But, you can only sell so many taffy apples. We need your help to fund the lane fees and ensure that these kids get to compete this season. Bowling is such a positive activity for our students. Some of our former bowlers have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. It is also a sport that they will play well into adulthood. When you pick up the paper in Chicago, sadly, you read about shootings and gang violence. These things are happening in my student’s community. It is a war on our streets that we cannot afford to loose. We must provide our children with safe, healthy alternatives. What better alternative then varsity sports? These young people are making all the right choices. They are good students and well-behaved. They proudly represent their school. Participating in sports builds self esteem, and teaches our youth to manage their time well. It teaches them about health, nutrition, exercise and many other life choices they must make. A student athlete must maintain a strong grade point average in order to participate. Athletics prepare our children for life after high school, it gives them the skills to succeed in college and in life. Studies show that students who are involved in their schools succeed. We need to provide every possible road to success for our students. There are far too many road blocks. Take down the road blocks and provide the lane fees to let our kids compete in bowling. An elite few may complete in college, but every one of them will have fun and succeed in high school while gaining the skills they need to further their education and graduate from a four year college or university. They may not bowl a perfect game, but they will have fun while representing their high school in a sport they have grown to love. Thank you for considering us.
