Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach at a small, rural school on the west side of the San Joaquin valley of California. I am the science department chair and teach two subjects: Biology and Human Anatomy & Physiology. The community is made up of mostly poor farm laborers whose children have little or no access to essential materials for class. With the type of students in our school, I try to provide as many hands on learning experiences as I can. Having these activities really helps engage the students and enhance the learning process, along with increasing retention of the material.
I always get the same question on the first day of school, "Are we going to get to dissect anything this year?" I always have to respond the same way, "If we have the money, we will." Some of the most interesting and memorable activities in high school science classes are the labs and dissections. These are the things that hook students into science; without these activities, some students may be lost forever.
If I had the materials to do dissections throughout the year, not only would students' learning be enhanced, but they will gain valuable skills that will carry on to college. Students who come out of high school with knowledge and experience in laboratory exercises will be much more successful in a college science environment. Many students coming out of high school are lacking the basic skills of a science classroom. By acquiring the following resources, students will be more adequately prepared for the college experiences. I need 20 prepared minks for dissection, 10 dissecting kits, and 2 boxes of nitrile exam gloves.
By supporting this project, you are not just supporting an activity in my classroom; you are also supporting the scientific community as a whole.
