Many of my kids have a lot of personality and can express themselves orally quite well. If this sounds like a euphamism for obnoxious kids, it isn't meant to be - I do appreciate their verbal acuity. Many of my kids got themselves into trouble in their previous school with their mouths. They have quick minds, but need to improve their skills with the written word. My kids need more time on the computer to improve their writing skills. Most do not have computers at home. My students need to move from writing a sentence to writing well-crafted paragraphs, which is greatly helped when they can see it on the screen, highlight sentences, cut, paste and move words around easily. 4th grade is a critical window of time when literacy skills must be brought up to grade level. Many of my kids are considered by the education establishment to be ?at-risk for school failure?- a label I refuse to allow to become self-fulfilling. Most of the children at our school (a charter school) come to us after they have had difficulty learning in the conventional public school environment (their neighborhood public school), though many are bright and even gifted. They flourish here because my teacher assistant and I are able to give them more individual attention and can have more flexibility (since we are a charter school) in addressing a range of learning styles. We have smaller classes and a higher adult to student ratio due to teacher assistants and dedicated parent and grandparent volunteers. My children come from every neighborhood of Los Angeles (32 zip codes in all). Their parents go to great lengths to bring them here - driving 45 minutes each way by car, or taking several buses. We have two ailing computers in my classroom. A new computer would allow me to give each of my twenty students a turn on the computer each day, which they sorely need. Please donate as much as you can toward purchase of a new computer. Our IT volunteer recommends we get the HP Smart Buy dx 5150. This is the most reliable model at the best price available anywhere.
