We are a rural, low-income public school serving the needs of approximately 450 students in grades 4 & 5.

This summer, our school, with the help of volunteers from a local Air Force base, completed a sorely-needed and much-appreciated upgrade to our computer network infrastructure. (Translation: the building was rewired.) This school-wide technology upgrade presents us with an opportunity and a capability we have previously lacked. We would like to take advantage of this solid foundation to help our students move past exclusively using computers for simple word processing tasks and Internet searches. But, to do that, we need tools -- tools so our students can creatively share their ideas with others in our building and beyond our school walls.

Raise your hand if you've ever watched a video clip on YouTube or on Facebook or MySpace or in an email. The Flip video camcorder (with power adapter and USB cabling) will give our students a chance to create and post their own video clips. How motivating is that? The camera is easy-to-use, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive; videos are simple to download using a built-in USB connection; the video content is easily edited with commonly used software that comes with the camera; and the final product can quickly be shared in a variety of formats. Easy enough for a 10-year-old to use, or his technologically challenged teacher.

You can help us to empower our students. You can help us to show them that they can be more than passive bystanders in the technology that surrounds them. The only way most of my students will have a chance to actively take part in today's technology and to share their ideas is through the tools we make available for them in school.
