I would like to purchase 20 new portable CD/Tape players for ESOL students at my school to listen to books on CDs. We are enrolling many more students who do not speak English, and listening to books read on CDs helps them tremendously. I have some books on tape and CDs in my library and borrow more from the local public and state library, but having enough players for the students is a real problem. I currently only have two CD players and ten cassette players, and they are checked out constantly. Our school participates in the Accelerated Reader reading incentive program, and ESOL students have a distinct disadvantage. Students read books and take computerized tests on them to earn points. The principal awards prizes and privileges to high point earners each week, and the new, non-speaking students are frequently at a loss and feel left out. I feel that the purchase of these players would "level the playing field" somewhat for these students. I would also like to house these players in the ESOL teacher's classroom, so that these students would have first access to them.
