Help Ms. C.

I am a 6th and 7th grade Science Teacher in a high-poverty school in New York, where over 90% of the children are on free lunch. In one of my classes, over half the children are on Individualized Education Plans, which means they have very specific special needs while still being allowed to be in the classroom. My kids range in skill level from basic elementary to grade-level, but many of them are years behind in reading, math, science and social studies.

My students are desperate to do their own experiments and to showcase them to the rest of the school in IS 151's first science fair in years! The 7th grade year in science can be tricky - it seems like a filler year to my students who are waiting to move on to the 8th grade. But if they were able to concoct their own experiments and conduct their own research, they would recognize the value in science education. I have the basic supplies for doing many of the experiments they'd like to complete (ie soil and seeds, ramps and balls, timers) and will purchase other materials if they'd like. But they don't have a good way to show off their work - and that's what having an amazing science fair hinges on!

Holding a science fair will not only motivate my students in science class, but will give them a more complete knowledge of the scientific method, push them to use their reading, writing, math, and creative skills, and give them a final product that will empower them to believe that their work matters. They will not only become better scientists, but better students who recognize the value in working hard to achieve a valuable end goal. All my students need are the materials to create a first-rate science fair, so that they can create a well-rounded experiment and display those results - just as scientists do in the real world!

Your help will allow my 7th grade students to push the boundaries of their current scientific knowledge and impart that knowledge to their classmates in a way that excites and energizes them. Science is a visual subject - and it has the ability to push a student who finds it interesting to continue their education and become a scientist, a doctor, a nurse, an anthropologist, an environmental engineer, or any other variety of fields where science is a necessary component of success. You can provide a first step of motivation to my next Newtons, early Einsteins, and curious Curies - and you can make sure that their knowledge and research can be shared!
