Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Interest in scientific research begins early on. Help inspire my students' interest in science. I teach High School Chemistry for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders at an inner-city school in New York. Our school is a very high need school with very highly motivated students. Our school title includes "Academy of Science" but our science department resources are not up to par. I am trying to implement an inquiry based approach to learning in Chemistry to motivate my students in lab but am limited by the supplies we have.

"Ms. P, this lab is so frustrating. I can't see what my partner is doing and I don't know what is going on." This was what one of my students told me after our first lab in Chemistry this past week. I looked around our lab room, a room made for 24 but currently holding 30 students, and realized that my students, working in groups of 6 to 8, were struggling through the lab. The reason? The lack of supplies. For a lab that required each student group to have a balance, they were forced to work in large groups because I had only 5 balances. We could not use any chemicals in the lab because I did not have enough safety goggles for my entire class. My resources as a Chemistry teacher are limited, unlike my students' eagerness to participate in lab.

I am asking for a contribution of 4 electronic balances, 12 additional pairs of goggles (so everyone can be safe!), chemical storage jars so each student group can have their own set of chemicals during lab, and a set of 12 150-mL beakers. These resources will allow me to reduce my students' lab group sizes from 6 students to approximately 2-3 students per group. Smaller groups will allow all students to participate in lab and gain useful lab skills and a greater knowledge of chemistry.

Your donation will help these talented, highly-motivated students reach their full potential. Their success in science should not be limited by the lack of resources available to them. I am asking for the minimum amount of resources to help my students become great scientific researchers, and who knows, maybe one of them will go on to find a cure for cancer. Please help make this possible. Thank you!
