Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 2nd grade in a low-income community in Los Angeles. All of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Resources are tight at my small school, and that means I am the one often buying the supplies we need. My second grade students are ready and eager to learn; they are also already behind their peers in wealthier communities. As a class we work together to maximize all of our learning time, because my students want to learn as much as they can. My class often uses whiteboards instead of paper, because it allows the students to show what they know and move on to the next question or problem. Imagine yourself as an eager 2nd grade student in my classroom. You are sitting with your table group, ready to review double-digit addition. You know that if your answers are quick and correct your team will earn table points. You look down at the white board I have purchased for you and every student in the class; you are ready and poised for action. You place your marker to the board and nothing. Nothing happens because your marker is left over from last year, and it has run out of ink. It seems like such a simple thing, a dry erase marker. However, in the hands of my students a marker is an opportunity to build self-esteem by earning points for their team. It is the chance to review key skills. It is a tool of learning. Never wasted or abused, the markers and dry erase boards in my classroom are valued and respected by my students. This school year we have had great success with our whiteboards and markers. Now as I look ahead to next year, I want to make sure that next years class starts on the right foot. Your donation will make a difference to my students. They love working with their whiteboards and markers. They love to play "games" which are really just opportunities to practice what they have learned. You can make a difference in our learning time, by helping to provide a classroom of children with markers. I have four table groups of students ready to show us all what they know. Your donation puts a marker in the hand of each student so that they can start the school year off ready to learn.
