Help Ms. O.

I work in a school where close to 85 percent of the students qualify for free lunch. The 100 students who walk in and out of my door have me for 90 minutes each day, 45 minutes of which are devoted to independent reading at least two out of the five days of the week. As an English teacher, I feel incredibly privileged to be able to teach students who are individually talented and knowledge-thirsty as they begin their journey through high school. Unfortunately, my class library is ill-equipped to provide them with the resources and books that they are quickly becoming more and more interested in. Every time students come up to me to ask me about more books on Anne Frank and Malcolm X, every time they come up to me to ask for poetry by Langston Hughes and Nikki Grimes, I have to give them an apologetic look and shake my head, telling them that I'll do my best to get those for them. Even though the Brooklyn Public Library is only about five blocks from the school, the students have little to no opportunity to go as they travel long distances to get to the school and must go home as quickly as possible before it gets dark, especially since most of them live in dangerous neighborhoods. With your help in donating the specified books, my students will not only have an opportunity to increase their reading levels, but also, they will have the great experience of diving into their interest and escaping into the great world of literature when they are at home. As a teacher, I cannot think of a better and more empowering way of giving the students a sense of ownership of the texts they explore. As they learn more about the world from the books you provide, you will ensure that each student has the opportunity to see themselves fit into that world in their futures, one book at a time.
