Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Amistad Dual Language School serves students who become literate in both Spanish and English. I will teach a Media Technology class that covers grades 5 through 8. The MT classes are new to the school this year. Previously I've taught a class in journalism. In MT classes students will use what they have learned about journalism and incorporate those skills into technological-electronic mediums. The 400 project will comprise of students conducting research centered around New York State's 400th anniversary of Hudson's landings at both present day NYC and Albany locations. The research will follow three strands: 1)Scientific = The Environmental, 2)Social Studies = The Historical, 3) Art-Music-Literature = The Cultural, and is meant to show how each strand has developed, impacted and contributed to the State's history. The 150 mile NYC-Albany Hudson River Valley is an essential focus of the project as it is the corridor in which the State's history first unfolded. Currently I am submitting grants in collaboration with the Black Rock Forrest Consortium, a non-profit private organization which owns property in the Highlands (West Point area). Students from Amistad often go to trips to BR to study various curriculum which BR has developed. I will use the grants from BR to charter the Clearwater and/or the Mystic Whaler. Both of these boats sail the Hudson and have their own curriculum. (Clearwater is also working on their own 400 project). The plan is to have Amistad students take journey's from NYC up to West Point where they will disembark and then travel to Black Rock via bus. At BR students will be debriefed about their journeys, particularly in accordance with the three strands. There will be a second journey from WP up to Albany. Students will use the video camera to document their journey, what they learned regarding the strands and how they've learned to be documenters. Students will then take these video tapings and edit them into a full-length video documentary that we will submit as part of the official celebration of the State's 400th anniversary. This project will help students explore and expand their knowledge of NY State and help them appreciate our history particularly the connections with NYC and other areas within our borders while it also teaches them to be media-savvy in a technological way.
