Spanish Class Library Novels for Heritage Spanish Speakers

Funded Jul 18, 2024

Thank you for donating to my project on Donors Choose entitled "Spanish Class Library Novels for Heritage Speakers." My students and I received a class set of the book "Viral en ZikZok" and a variety of other high-interest novels for free choice reading.

Many of my students have grown up in the United States and have always had classes in English. Many speak both Spanish at home and are now eager to gain experience with reading in Spanish. We began the school year by reading "Viral en ZikZok," which is a choose-your-own-adventure story. The main character is trying to become famous online while making healthy life choices. At the end of each chapter, we would vote on her next choice and see if she could finally become famous and happy. My students loved discussing and reading this story all in Spanish. Some of my students said it was the first novel they had ever read in Spanish. Thank you for being a part of their reading journey!

Now that students have gained experience reading in Spanish, they will soon start reading a novel of their choice for the first five to ten minutes of every class. The other novels in this Donors Choose project have a variety of topics, such as dragons, sports, friendships, and growing up with two cultures. The reading levels also vary from beginner to advanced, so each student should be able to find a novel that is a good fit for them. They've been excitedly looking through the books, and each student will officially choose a book after Thanksgiving.

Thank you again for your generous donation towards this project. These Spanish novels are helping my students to gain confidence, literacy skills, connections with each other, and a love for reading in Spanish. They all want me to say "muchas gracias." Thank you again!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Barry
