  • Headed to ISTE!

    Funded Feb 22, 2019

Thank you for your donation, which helped fund lodging and food stipends for my trip to Philadelphia for the ISTE 2019 education technology conference. This conference was an incredible professional development opportunity and well worth the cost of attending! For four days I was surrounded by fellow educators just as passionate about incorporating technology and transforming lessons thanks to the power and possibilities available with new digital tools and websites.

Thanks to your financial support, I had a lot less to worry about on this trip since I could focus on learning and not the cost of travel. My hotel was right next to the conference center, which was convenient and centrally located for easy walks to conference sessions, evening events hosted by technology companies, and sightseeing in the city. The Reading Terminal Market, located on the opposite side of the convention center, was full of food stands and perfect for local flavor and quick meals between sessions, and there were many other restaurants within walking distance to make it easy to stay downtown on foot.

I was able to attend sessions on topics like creating websites for digital student portfolios, using Chrome extensions and add-ons to improve student learning, and ideas on how to incorporate technology during daily instruction. I also visited the exhibit hall full of vendors and learned more about new programs and services to integrate as well as updates that are being pushed out this summer to know about the changes.

Thank you again for helping me attend this four day conference!”

  • Let's Get Physical!

    Funded Dec 31, 2018

Oh my goodness! My heart is so full! Thank you so much for your amazing generosity in helping fund this project for my kids! They were so excited to see that we had good magnets like StarBase has (a week-long STEM field trip :) ).

The kids have done a ton of exploring with the magnets. I doubt there's a surface in our room that has had one or more stuck to it. There's been a lot of discoveries made that I wouldn't necessarily be able to get to in class. I love that. Our latest use of the magnets has been discovering if we can make the iron in cereal react. (Some were successful.) They were fascinated and began to barter with me to be able to bring a magnet home to check their cereal. lol (We agreed with, here's a Ziploc, bring a little of your cereal to school and you can check it here.) I love seeing them getting so engaged in learning!

The density columns are the coolest, the kids just don't realize it. :) The teacher who had to scrounge things for teaching density does. The kids explore them, mass them with a digital scale (also from DonorsChoose!), and get much needed practice with data collection. It may not seem as exciting as making things move with magnets (they've also explored which of the columns are magnetic) but it's such deep learning to see how density affects matter.

Thank you so much for putting these awesome resources in my classroom! In case no one has told you today, you are truly a hero!!”

  • “Moving” Along in Kindergarten

    Funded Jan 1, 2019

Words cannot express how much my students and I appreciate your donation to our project. We received so many wonderful materials. The students thoroughly enjoyed helping me unpack the boxes to see what we received. The students are enjoying their subscription to Scholastic News. They are learning so much and are enjoying the videos and crafts that go along with it. The students are also enjoying their new manipulatives and center activities. Once again, thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts!”

  • Moving and Learning

    Funded Oct 21, 2018

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my students and I. This one desk has given my students an area to go to to work quietly and independently during work time. One particular student really enjoys sitting at this desk because he can also "bike" while working. Our deskcycle fits perfectly under this desk but the desk is a tad bit too tall (even at it's lowest setting) for all my students and the chairs we have in the classroom. As a result, my littlest kids, who need to let the most energy out, can't utilize this desk. Although not all can utilize this desk, we have other options for them. Thank you all for making my classroom a better place for me kiddies!”

  • Esports & VAPA Programs Need Help After Camp Fire

    Funded Jan 22, 2019

The technology that was provided to our school will be of great use for both our Visual and Performing Arts programs as well as our school Esports team. For those unfamiliar, Esports is competitive games on the computer against other schools, both within our region and without. During the first semester of school, many of our students competed in Esports, playing against major schools across the state.

Students came to the school eagerly anticipating the rise of Esports as a competitive extracurricular activity for their school, and some students even said that Esports was the main reason that they chose our school to attend. We anticipate that the computers will provide years of use for our organization, and will allow us to offer our students fantastic opportunities during the years to come.”

  • Getting Back to Flexible Seating After the Fire

    Funded Jan 22, 2019

My students are so fortunate for the generous donations you gave to help them get back to flexible seating options in our new classroom. Each student has chosen which type of flexible seating will make them their most successful, and they use it everyday during work time and centers. I have noticed a huge change in my students ability to focus and complete their tasks now that their little bodies are able to wiggle, wobble, and bounce while they learn. I have had a few kiddos that realized that the type of seating they were using was not working very well for them. They chose on their own to try out different types of seating, and have now found that small bounces on the yoga ball seats are the best choice for them to be most successful. I love it!

I placed all the flexible seating out in my classroom, and got rid of the hard plastic chairs we were using after school one day. When my students walked in the next morning their eyes lit up like magic had occurred. They were so excited to try each type of flexible seating out. We spent some time just trying each seat, then we started to choose which was best for each student. Although my students know they are doing better with the new seating they do not fully comprehend the amazing results we have had in our classroom because of it.

As I sit and watch my students hard at work on a task at their tables, and in centers, I can see their little bodies wiggling, wobbling, and bouncing; but I also see their engagement and focus on the task at hand. Many of my students have commented that, "we used to have seats like this in our old classroom that burned up". It seems to help them feel better and move forward more to know that we have been able to replace these seats that help them accomplish so much during the day.

From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for being such an important part of the building of our new classroom, and the restoration of our hope for the future.”

  • Hot Off the Press

    Funded Feb 3, 2019

Thank you again for your support of our classroom heat press project. Most of my students had no idea how graphics got on t-shirts, so they have been learning a lot because of this project. They are excited to use our Cricut to cut out their designs and then use the heat press to fuse the design onto their t-shirt. They love that when they do something great, they can make a shirt and wear it home. Parents will love this too, as they will see immediately when their child does something amazing. I can see us making awesome shirts for everything we do in the 5th grade. This has helped with student engagement, as all students want to make and wear home their new shirts.”

  • Beginner Band Supplies

    Funded May 24, 2018

Thank you so much for supporting my middle school music students! Not only has your donation helped me continue to provide music instruction in school, but the supplies have opened up many new opportunities for my students.

In school, my students participate in weekly jazz band. We had our first performance of the year in December, when we performed a jazzy rendition of "Jingle Bells" at a community event. The jazz band is also performing for school events, such as the winter concert and Black History Month celebration. Kids are now learning to improvise on their instruments and take solos!

Several students are also involved in Saturday classes at our local performing arts center. They are taking extra lessons on their band and orchestra instruments and get to perform in special community concerts. Not only are they making outstanding progress on their instruments, but kids are developing friendships with students from across the city and building confidence!

Looking ahead, many of the students who received supplies and instruments from your donation are preparing for our district and regional band and orchestra festivals. Several 7th graders are now practicing and getting ready for next year's high school auditions. Your support with new music books, bows, cello stops, and instruments has made these opportunities possible! Thank you so much for making this possible for my students!”

  • There's a Cricut in Our Classroom!

    Funded Feb 2, 2019

We love our new Cricut and have used it multiple times already. Many of my students had never seen a Cricut and how it works before. It was fun to capture their facial expressions as they watched their designs get cut out. They couldn't believe a machine that small could make such intricate designs. They loved the entire process, from choosing a design, to putting all the pieces together like a puzzle. The room has been a-buzz with everything they can do with this machine.

Once my students heard they could make their own shirts and mugs, they were even more excited. I have submitted a project for vinyl and plain t-shirts so that they can create amazing items to bring home with them. We will be making shirts and cups that showcase some of the greatness they show off in the classroom. I hope that you consider taking a look at it when it goes live.

Thank you for your support of my kiddos. I cannot wait to create some amazing projects with my students because of your support.”

  • For the Love of Literacy!

    Funded Jan 22, 2019

I haven't even put these games in the cabinets yet. They won't let me! Each day as they finish their work and get to take a brain break by playing with building toys or pretend play at the market they instead ask me "What game do we get today?"

YES! They would rather go fishing for sight words than build with K'Nex right now. I'm sure it's the novelty of it being new, but I love seeing them take turns and quiz each other on the words, and having a competition to see who can find the words first. They also love the lock set that helps them with letters and beginning sounds. Since the keys only fit in the right lock, I can set this up as an independent station that corrects them as they play. Other games are more for small groups and teacher assisted like the CVC word builders. I need to make sure they are spelling the words correctly so an adult watches as they work to make sure they are using reading strategies as they figure it out.

Thank you again for helping bring these marvelous games to my students. They love them and want to use them to learn. That makes me one happy and proud teacher!”
