Help a classroom in support of Supporting Newtown Teachers

"The selfless spirit of the teaching profession -- exhibited so heroically by Sandy Hook's educators during the tragic events of December 14th -- continues to be displayed by the teachers of Newtown on a daily basis. Districtwide, these educators are returning to their schools in the face of profound grief, anxiety and challenge -- but with great strength, resiliency, and determination. We salute the teachers of Newtown and will work together with nonprofit partners such as DonorsChoose.org to provide them with support as they reenter and restart their classrooms." • iPad For Algebra Touch For My Math Partner

    Funded May 30, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my class so we could have an iPad to help with our learning. As you know, twenty first century skills will be required of our intermediate school students now and in the future, and with an iPad I will be able to deliver rich, full, and technologically appropriate lessons that will inspire students to a greater level of learning. Imagine a classroom with a student's work appearing on the board as they complete problems at their desk. As the iPad gets passed around the room and problems become more and more complex, the discussions, explanations, and desire to be involved will fill the room with vigorous learning. In addition, with the iPhone as a tool for many of the students, the ability to communicate and pass information back and forth will possibly create a class network where learning is fun and everyone is involved. Wow! thanks again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Roodhuyzen

  • Nutmeg Award Winning Books

    Funded Jun 10, 2013

Thank you so much for the 2013 Nutmeg Award Winning books for teens and middle school students. With your kind donations, 12 classrooms were able to include these books in their libraries as we embark on the Readers Workshop program from Columbia University. The students throughout our hallway will be able to form book clubs with fellow students reading the latest and greatest publications from these award winning authors. You made this happen!! Thank you so very much. As the books were unpacked, students were commenting on the merits of different books and were encouraging each other to read them. It was such a wonderful motivator to have the students urging fellow student to read, and I could just sit back and let them get started. Thanks again!”

  • Illuminating Images â€" Document Camera Requested

    Funded Apr 18, 2013

Thank you all for supporting my project. The document camera has worked out wonderfully. Students are able to clearly see instructional manipulatives and paper documents. I am finding that students are completing some classwork more accurately and thoroughly as a result. Several students noticed and have commented to me about the camera in class and how I was using it. The clarity of image has been extremely helpful.

I have offered to share my document camera with my colleagues. They have reported similar results and a desire to own the camera. Further, this summer we had a presenter providing professional development on 'Reader's Workshop' request a document camera. I was able to lend mine, allowing all the district staff receiving this training to have a clear 'picture' of the techniques and instructional texts described in that week long workshop.

This one piece of equipment is making a big difference for us here at Reed. Thank you again.”

  • Small Group Instruction

    Funded Mar 8, 2013

Thank you for your generous donation towards my classroom. The students are utilizing all of the materials to help with organization and reading achievement.

The bins are used to store materials for word study which is a part of our Language Arts block. The easel is used during strategy lessons. The red chart/organizer is used to organize guided reading and reader's workshop data. The purple mailbox is used to keep extra workshop materials so students have them at their fingertips. The 2 pocket chart is used to store materials for my instructional assistants to run reading groups. Finally the red and black canvas pocket bag is inside a crate and used when I am walking around the room conferencing with students.

Organization is vital when teaching and learning. It has helped provide structure to create the best learning atmosphere for my students.”

    Ms. Beauty

  • Photographing Science Work

    Funded Apr 26, 2013

We are so thrilled with the pictures that are posted on the bulletin boards to show what is going on in the Science Lab. It helps to spread the enthusiasm about math and science lessons. It is a great inspiration to all the students and parents who walk through the building. It is so much fun to see ourselves in action or to just see what is available. It also sets a tone for anticipation of what is to come for the younger students when they see pictures of upper grade students in action. We appreciate all the pictures that you post.”

  • Making Math Meaningful Through Literature (Part 3)

    Funded Mar 23, 2013

Thank you so much for the math literature that you contributed to our literacy center. The new books are truly helping our students understand math concepts and are providing an engaging, cross-curricular way to introduce, reinforce, and review classroom learning. The books are available in out literacy center for use by all students. Teachers check out related literature that correlates to their math lessons. Teachers are using the books as read alouds to introduce or reinforce concepts.

Students are particularly enjoying having math books as a center during math class. They are enjoying seeing math concepts in print and pictures, and they are discussing books with each other and building communication skills related to math. Our older students (grades 3 and 4) are enjoying the time with picture books, especially some of our reluctant math learners. These books are engaging to all!

This project has provided us with an additional way to engage all students in mathematics and reach our new standards. The math literature truly makes math more meaningful for children. We are seeing that students' interest in mathematics is sparked and concepts are even more meaningful. Thank you for this gift!”

  • Caterpillars to Butterflies

    Funded Mar 26, 2013

Thank you for the wonderful resources that I received for my students. The reading comprehension workbooks have helped my students make connections to past experiences. They read the stories and are able to identify the new vocabulary by using the pictures provided on the corresponding pages.

The new story books have introduced them to all sorts of new vocabulary, themes, and even humor! Using the pictures on the front covers, they love to try to predict what the book will be about. Once they start reading the books, they enjoy finding out if their predictions were accurate.

Having these new workbooks, story books, and reading comprehension books have enabled my students to learn more vocabulary, share their ideas, and make connections to prior experiences and other books we have read.

Thank you for making a wonderful contribution to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Conron
