  • Fostering An Environment For Reading

    Funded May 6, 2014

My students were beyond excited about the materials we received. With our novels, notebooks, and other materials we were able to begin a huge literature circle. Having immediate access to post-its, highlighters, notebooks, and bookmarks we were ready to dive into our novels and immediately start having mature conversations about books that are of interest to them. I choose Lois Duncan novels to start our literature circle because they are novels that I am familiar with and I was sure that the students would be interested in the content.

On a regular basis we are meeting in groups and discussing our reading. Students have begun to have real conversations about the novels they are reading and they are beyond excited when it is time to come together and talk about their reading. I have never witnessed such excitement when it came to reading with sixth graders. The students come to class with a world full of information to discuss as a group and can't wait until the next time we meet.

It is amazing that something as simple as the ability to keep your own book would change the environment of reading. Because the novels are theirs to keep, they have a new respect for the materials and willingness to read and discuss it.

I am so thankful for your thoughtful and generous contributions to this project. You have no idea how much it has changed the lives of my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. OConnor

  • Laying the Base Track: Pro-Style

    Funded May 6, 2014

    Dear Donorschoose.org,

Thank you for your generous donation of the Macbook Pro. It's much-appreciated! I will think of you every time I use it. It will afford me the opportunity to develop digital recording techniques to augment my guitar and modern rock band programs. It was so generous of you to think of our school. The students immediately began working with Garage Band digital recording program. As most of them are experimenting with Garage Band on their Smart phones or iPads we quickly learned the differences between the different operating systems. Certain adjustments are needed to adapt Garage Band for the iPads as we will be securing licensing for Garage Band and other appropriate music programs. This donation also affected my teaching as I will have to develop classroom procedures for integrating digital music recording into my curriculum. This program also allows me to work with students who may be more interested in the music production aspect of music composition. Again, thank you for providing me the opportunity to expand the musical horizons of our students.

    Thanks again.

    Sincerely,

    Kevin McCann

  • Classroom Materials for Autism Students

    Funded May 6, 2014

I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. The tools that you have funded have enabled my students to succeed to the best of their ability. You have helped to create a vibrant learning environment for these young children with autism. Having these materials helped give each and every child an opportunity to learn as much as they can while giving them a safe and encouraging environment in which to learn.

The materials I have requested have helped my students work on their reading skills in a variety of ways. My students are now able to work on learning academics and fine motor skills at the same time. I used the laminating pouches to laminate the pictures printed in color to create different activities for my students such as file folders, matching games and task boxes. Each of the activities created are reused daily and geared towards their IEP goals. Each of the math manipulative's/ activities are used daily to help my visual and tactile learners. Thank you for helped to create a vibrant learning environment for these young children with autism. Being children from a large city, many of my students don't have the exposure to learning materials and resources outside of school to promote growth and development. You have helped with your generous donations to give each and every child an opportunity to learn as much as they can while giving them a safe and encouraging environment in which to learn. Thank you again, your donation is greatly appreciated !”

  • Love & Life through Shakespeare

    Funded May 6, 2014

    Dear Donors:

Thank you for your show of unselfishness in contributing to my class project "Love & Life through Shakespeare." These books have been a real help to my students in helping them to fully understand Shakespeare. They were experiencing difficulty understanding the Shakespearan English, so reading a contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet along with Shakespeare's version, made it more understandable, not to mention, students were more able to identify with the characters and their situation and problems.

On the behalf of my students, I would like to extend our gratitude. My students were very excited at receiving the shipment of books. My school is a small school with a limited budget, so our gifts and contributions from Donors Choose are always welcomed and appreciated. Your gift afforded each of my student to be able to have his/her individual book to read, and as such, I was able to assign reading homework, which allowed us to complete the book in a shorter time with more time for class discussion. Again I say thanks to all the donors who give of their time and contributions, New York City School children and their teachers thanks you immensely .”

  • Attention! Room Dividers Needed to Reduce Distractions

    Funded May 6, 2014

Thank you again for your generous donation, which allowed my students to obtain room dividers for our classroom. Because of your generosity, we were able to order all five room dividers, which are now being utilized in the classroom and shared with other 6:1:1 classrooms in our school. Your donation not only impacted my six students, but nearly 40 students on a daily basis. On behalf of all of the students and teachers, thank you for supporting our students with disabilities on a larger level than I ever could have imagined!

As described in the project proposal (that you all so wonderfully responded to by donating), we anticipated that the dividers would minimize extraneous visual distractions throughout the day and support students in increasing their time on and attention to task. The room dividers have done that, and so much more. They have also allowed us as teachers to break up space in our classrooms in more meaningful ways by creating visual barriers. The dividers are used throughout the day for small group activities, centers rotations, and to designate areas of the classroom for structured play. We have also discovered that they are virtually indestructible - they are easily cleaned, transported, and fixed, making them the perfect solution for our seemingly always messy classroom that is being ever rearranged to meet students' needs.

My students, and the other students in the school, now have the resources needed to work with minimized distractions throughout the day. They have enhanced opportunities to increase their time on task and attention to task. They now have classrooms with are designated areas to work and other areas to play. Their learning and skill progression has been elevated because of your generosity and willingness to support them. Thank you for supporting my classroom, students, and school in such a meaningful way.

    Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Stall

  • Classroom Centers

    Funded May 6, 2014

I can not thank all of you enough for your donations. With all of your support the students in my classroom now have the materials needed to help them succeed. The classroom dividers have helped us break into groups without the distractions of the other students. Now that the students are able to work without being distracted they are able to use these materials to help further improve their acquisition of skills. The i-pad has helped the students use various applications to teach different skills with the use of technology. To work on the students fine motor skills, the snap/zipper/button materials have helped us incorporate this into our classroom centers. Another helpful tool was the beads. Stringing beads is very calming to the students in my classroom and this has been another good fine motor task for them. Thank you all again for everything it is much appreciated by my students and myself.”

    Funded May 6, 2014

Thank you so much for your generosity! My students have been very excited to record their music this year! At our school, we have 4 modern rock ensembles which meet every day of the week. • Learning with Ease with an Easel

    Funded May 6, 2014

It has been such an honor to receive your donation. The easel has made a world of difference in our classroom of learners with autism. It has allowed them to engage more fully with manipulatives. It has allowed them to use felt board equipment. It has allowed them to participate in shared writing activities and to read back their own writing to the class. They love playing "school" with it during center time and they enjoy using the math manipulatives that are magnetic and felt backed. The old easel we had was too high and not conducive to small group work. This one is on wheels and is so much more practical for early learners. Thanks for thinking of our little class here in Brooklyn.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McArdle

  • Learning made EAS-y with a new EASEL

    Funded May 6, 2014

We are forever grateful to your company for providing us with the resources we so desperately needed in the classroom. Before we received the easel, the students were using a large board that was far from the table. It was hung too high to be functional and it was not engaging for the students because it was so far away. Our new easel allows the students to participate more fully with felt materials, magnetic materials and markers. Due to their autism, they sometimes have difficulty focusing, but this easel makes is so much EASIER! They love it!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. McArdle
