I teach English and reading to twelfth-grade students in a high-needs school. Our population is mostly Latino and African American with a poverty rate of over 90%. However, my students are determined and motivated young men and women who demonstrate a natural curiosity about the world around them, particularly historical events that have played a role in shaping current events.
