  • Memoirs for My Spanish-Speaking Students

    Funded Sep 7, 2018

All of our new memoirs in Spanish have been added to the collection. I am so happy this was right at the time our senior English classes will start checking out individual memoirs to read after reading When I Was Puerto Rican in their classes.

In the pictures, you will see some of my Spanish speaking students in front of our autumnal book tree. You can tell by their smiles they are happy we now have a few books in their native language.

I am hoping to expand our collection of novels and memoirs in other languages soon!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Woychowski

  • Novels In Spanish

    Funded Mar 29, 2016

Thank you for supporting my students. Prior to your generous donation, we had just 1 novel in Spanish, an older translated romance novel. With more than 30% of my students speaking Spanish, this was inadequate for our needs.

In the pictures, you will see how we are going to display these novels. They will be placed above our popular fiction holdings so that our English Language Learners can find them as they are introduced to the library cataloging system.

4 of my regular library patrons were very happy to learn of this project. All 4 are bilingual and are tutors of our ELL students. They were quite willing to be our Twitter feed and website advertisements for these new books, which are included in our thank-you photos.

Our last photo features a very grateful Library Media Specialist! Two of these novels happen to be ones I love (Enrique's Journey and Like Water for Chocolate)!

    Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Woychowski

  • A Book Truck for Our Library Work Study Students

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

Thank you for your continued support of our students.

Please take a look at the photos I posted. You will see CP with one of our old carts. The old carts have wobbly, squeaky wheels and have graffiti on them. With the loud wheels, some of our work-studies preferred to carry things in their arms and make multiple trips.

First to see and test out the new cart was AM, giving the big thumbs up. It went out to deliver some lower level novels to a self-contained language arts class and a vertical file on Ancient Rome to another English class. CZ is pushing the cart in these two pictures. Before she left though, I couldn't resist my own thumbs up picture.

Our Library Media Center is also responsible for A/V equipment, including LCD projectors. AS sent two LCDs back to teachers after we replaced the burned out bulbs.

This new cart will help even our smallest work studies deliver and return materials to support curriculum and instruction.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Woychowski

  • Speakers For LCD Projectors And DVD Players

    Funded Mar 20, 2016

Our school was built in 1963. Our classrooms are large and crowded. The acoustics are poor. In order to supplement lessons, our teachers use DVDs and streaming media via our databases. Unfortunately, we often receive complaints the sound is too low.

Upon their arrival, I set out to test how these speakers will help our students to hear better when using media in the classroom. In the pictures you will see several examples of how they will be used, just from today: an English class watching Frankenstein for improved comprehension, an Astronomy class listening to a podcast about the solar system, an English class using Khan Academy for raising SAT scores, and math class using Khan Academy for the same. Every teacher who tested the speakers was amazed at the difference in the sound.

We are so thankful you chose to help us obtain these speakers. We want to incorporate more dynamic media into our school, but face the challenge of budget cuts and older facilities. Thank you for assisting our kids.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Woychowski

100% of my students receive free lunch. A vast number are English Language Learners, and are first generation Americans. They are athletes, musicians, actors, and artists. Over 1500 students walk the same halls I did. I am proud to live and teach in the same community I grew up in and where I raised my son.
